Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before visiting Black Chasm Cavern or California Cavern.

  • Do I need a reservation?

Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, holidays, and for groups. While same-day space may sometimes be available, tours can fill quickly during busy travel periods, school breaks, and holiday weekends.

School groups, scout groups, and expedition tours should be booked in advance to help ensure availability and allow our staff to prepare for your visit. Expedition tours have limited capacity and depend on seasonal cave conditions, so early reservations are especially helpful.

What should I wear for a cave tour?

Wear comfortable walking shoes with good traction and bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. The caves stay cool year-round: Black Chasm Cavern is about 58°F (14°C) inside, and California Cavern is about 54°F (12°C) inside.

Closed-toe shoes are recommended, especially for stairs, damp walkways, and uneven areas near the cave entrance. For California Cavern expedition tours, expect a more physical spelunking experience and dress for crawling, climbing, and getting dirty.

What items are not allowed inside the caves?

To help protect the caves and keep the tour route safe, food, drinks, gum, water bottles, camel-back style packs, large bags, backpacks, tripods, selfie sticks, extra camera attachments, and walking sticks are not allowed inside the caves.

These rules help protect delicate cave formations, prevent spills and debris, and keep walkways and stairways clear for everyone on the tour. Small personal items that fit securely in a pocket are usually the easiest option. At Black Chasm Cavern, please be especially careful with phones, keys, jewelry, and other important items, as anything dropped into the deeper parts of the cave may be unretrievable.

Are the caves wheelchair accessible? Are pets allowed?

Both gift shops are accessible, but the cave tours themselves are not wheelchair accessible. The walking tours include stairs, and visitors should be comfortable walking, standing, and using stairs without relying on mobility assistive devices inside the caves. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, and similar mobility devices cannot be used on the cave tours. Anyone with joint, heart, respiratory, balance, or mobility concerns should review the tour details and consider their personal abilities before participating. For location-specific tour details, visit Black Chasm Plan Visit & Pricing or California Cavern Plan Visit & Pricing.

Pets and emotional support animals are not allowed inside the caves. Service animals with proper documentation are allowed under California law, but visitors should be aware that cave stairs, narrow passages, damp surfaces, and low-light areas may make the environment challenging for some service animals.

What is the Black Chasm Cavern walking tour like?

The Black Chasm Cavern walking tour lasts about 50 minutes and descends approximately 100 feet below the surface into the upper levels of this vertical cave.

During the tour, visitors explore three chambers and view rare cave formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, sparkling crystal-like formations, and a blue lake below the viewing platform.

Black Chasm is especially known for its rare helictite formations, which are delicate, twisting cave formations that seem to grow in unexpected directions. These formations are one of the cavern’s standout features and a major reason Black Chasm is recognized as a unique cave experience in California.

What walking tours are offered at California Cavern?

California Cavern offers seasonal walking tours through mostly level, well-lit cave passages and walkways. During the winter, the cave naturally floods and closes temporarily due to seasonal water levels. As the water recedes and access returns, the cave transitions into the Trail of Lakes Tour, which lasts roughly 45 minutes and highlights the seasonal underground lakes left by the winter flooding. Later in the drier season, as water levels continue to lower and more of the cave becomes accessible, the tour transitions to the Trail of Lights Tour, which usually lasts about 60 to 80 minutes.

There are approximately 60 steps throughout the walking tour, but they are spread out along the route rather than being one continuous staircase. Visitors can expect small sets of stairs at a time, such as a few steps here and several steps there.

Does California Cavern offer expedition tours?

Yes. California Cavern offers expedition-style spelunking tours by reservation, depending on the season and current water levels. These tours become available as winter floodwater recedes and the cave passages become safely accessible again.

Expedition tours are off-trail spelunking adventures that go beyond the standard walking tour route. You should expect a more physical cave experience that may include crawling, climbing, uneven passageways, tight spaces, and getting dirty while exploring undeveloped sections of the cavern with a guide. Maybe even an underground lake or two.

The Mammoth Cave Expedition is a 2-3 hour tour for ages 8 and up.

The Middle Earth Expedition is a longer and more challenging 3-5 hour trip for ages 16 and up. This tour is generally tied to dry-season conditions and depends on water levels.

Because expedition availability can be limited and depends on seasonal water conditions, it is best to make reservations early, especially if you are planning during the winter or hoping to reserve as soon as expedition tours reopen.
